Week 2 EOC: Boston Consulting Group - Video Games

The video game market is definitely an interesting market to always be aware of and to always look out for, simply because although video game trends tend to be the same or similar, it’s always and constantly changing more than people would normally think. When it comes to video games, big-name and independent developers alike are trying to think of new ways to engage players into their games mainly in the form of new twists and gimmicks within a certain game attempting to bring something fresh into the world of video gaming. With mobile games on the constant rise, it is likely that they will become a definite staple within the gaming community than just a “casual” experience. For the first time, mobile gaming will take a larger share than PC with $36.9 billion, up 21.3% globally” (https://newzoo.com/insights/articles/global-games-market-reaches-99-6-billion-2016-mobile-generating-37/). Another point towards the video game industry constantly changing would be the rising surge of “Esports” which is of course gaming at the competitive level. Even levels up to the fact that even sports media giant ESPN is even covering Esports regularly now. “Pro-gaming is set to generate upwards of a billion dollars in revenues by 2019, according to research firm Newzoo” (http://time.com/4241977/espn-esports/). Just like what was previously mentioned, video games are always in a flux in terms of what is trending and what is popular, a great way to firmly grasp the ideas of big-name video game developers is to look into E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) which happens annually. E3 is always the most anticipated time of each year for video gamers simply because it is when future video games themselves or even possible consoles or peripherals are announced and it gets the whole gaming community excited for what is to come in the future of the gaming world. A great example of this would be from E3 2016; the fact that gaming giant, SEGA has revealed and confirmed that they have “major news” for Sonic The Hedgehog fans. Despite Sonic The Hedgehog being around for such a long time and having its recent games within the franchise to be massive flops, Sonic is still a major icon within the gaming community and with the fans knowing that Sonic will probably be getting a remake for its 25th anniversary, fans of the old Sonic The Hedgehog games are going nuts for the pure and potential nostalgia. “SEGA has confirmed that it will have some news in store about “Sonic The Hedgehog” (http://www.techtimes.com/articles/164999/20160614/e3-2016-sega-confirmed-to-have-major-news-for-sonic-the-hedgehog-fans-but-dont-get-too-excited.htm).
